The flying man ceremony is a dance of praying for fertility by some peoples in Mexico and Central America. In particular, the totonak people in the eastern state of veracruz perform the ritual dance, which expresses the harmony between nature and the spiritual world, as well as people's respect for the nature and the divine world. During the ceremony, four young men climbed an 18-40-meter pole cut fresh from the forest after praying for forgiveness from the mountain god. The fifth man, standing on the platform at the top of the pole, played music dedicated to the sun, the four winds and the cardinal directions with flute and drum. After this begging operation, several others jumped into the air from the platform. They were attached to a long rope that was attached to a platform at the top of the pole and rotated as the pole turned, mimicking the movements of a flight, before descending gradually to the ground. Each change in the dance vividly represents the myth of the growth of all things in the universe. In this way, the ceremony of the flying man expresses the world outlook and values of the group and serves as a channel for the group to communicate with god and pray for prosperity. For dancers and many who follow this custom and participate in psychic rituals, the flying man ritual inspires pride and respect for the cultural traditions and identity of their ethnic group.
