North of the amazon, a group of tupi guarani-speaking vayapi residents, now numbering about 580 people, live in 40 small villages in the vayapi reserve in amapa state in northeastern Brazil. Since ancient times, the people of vayapi have used vegetable pigments to draw geometric shapes on their bodies and various objects. Over the centuries, they gradually created a unique language that combined picture and verbal expression to reflect their unique world view and to pass on their basic knowledge of social life.
This particular painting art is called "kushiva", which USES yellow and red pigments and aromatic resin extracted from the amazon rouge tree to create beautiful patterns. Khushiva requires a complex art form that, according to the vayapi, is impossible to master before the age of 40 and learn how to make paints. Common figures are jaguar, anaconda, butterfly and fish. These patterns reflect the creation of human beings and vividly represent various myths about the origin of human beings. This form of figure painting is closely related to the ancient American Indian oral culture, and is of sociological, aesthetic, cultural, religious and metaphysical significance. In fact, "kushiwa" is also a portrayal of the social structure of vayapi, whose significance far exceeds the role of graphic art. It encompasses a vast and complex system of understanding the universe and the special ways in which man and nature interact. This graphic art which contains rich traditional knowledge is developing with the continuous renewal of patterns and the innovation of local artists.
