The city of Geraardsbergen holds its annual city in the first Monday of March each year to celebrate the end of winter in Sunday, 8 days ago, when Krakelingen and the Festival of Fire Barrels are held. The festive ceremony brings a sense of continuity and history to the participants, and allows people to relive historical stories and legends that have been passed down from generation to generation. A few days before the festival, the store began decorating its own window, the Baker began to bake special Klacklingen donuts, and the school teacher began to talk about explaining the origins of festivals and rituals. On the day of the festival, the church presided over and the city councillor led a procession of thousands of people, carrying bread, wine, fish and fire, leaving the Church of Hunnegem to Oudenberg and climbing to the Notre Dame Chapel on the top of the mountain. In the chapel, the church hosts bless Klacklingen and recite prayers. Representatives of religious and secular authorities will then drink wine in a 16th century silver cup with a small live fish in the wine-a custom that has recently been controversial. They then threw 10,000 Klacklingen donuts into the crowd, one of which was caught with an award-winning voucher, a gold jewel specially made for the event. In the evening, people gather back on the mountain and light a bucket of Fire to celebrate the arrival of spring. Crowds of onlookers will carry burning torches down the mountain, bringing light to the city. The festive ceremony brings a sense of continuity and history to the participants, and allows people to relive historical stories and legends that have been passed down from generation to generation.
